A selection of Panda Face ginger (Asarum maximum) made by Tony Avent. This ginger has evergreen leaves and spreads slowly to create a groundcover for the shade. With glossy, oval to arrow shaped, green leaves with pewter colored, embossed tortoise shell-patterned veining. The common name “Panda Face Ginger” comes from the large, clearly patterned, black and white flowers that appear just below the foliage from mid to late spring (photo below). So far here at the nursery it seems to do well and we have multiple clumps growing fine. It was listed originally as zone 7a hardy but does quite well in our zone 5 garden.
