Sauromatum venosum (Voodoo Lily)

Temperennial, well almost. This will actually overwinter in zone 5, assuming you have good drainage and mulch it well. And usually if you would lose it the offsets will start it all over again. This is voodoo lily, which is in the genus Aracae, so you know we love it. It is a cousin to Arisaema (Jack-in-the-pulpit) and totally lends a super tropical look to the landscape. First to arise in spring is well a super odd looking flower (see picture below), that sort of looks like a foot long hot dog with a carmine red and yellow spathe (hood) wrapped behind… ultra super freaky. Three to four weeks later, a palmate (hand shape) leaf comes up. Leaves can be huge (2′ not uncommon), and are borne on a snakeskin looking stem. Multiplies quickly and is also super easy in pots. Tropical looking for sure. Zone 5 hardy with cover and drainage.
